Ilip, an ILPA Group company, European leader in food packaging production since 1962, focuses on Eco-Design, offering an innovative range of trays for packaged meat in modified atmosphere. We asked Giovanni Donini, Foodservice Packaging & Fresh Food Packaging Italy Sales Manager & Export of Ilip srl, for a market forecast and the company's vision for the upcoming months.
Which solutions are you offering during this period?
One of the products we are focusing on is the Sealmaster line, the range of heat-sealable meat trays suitable for modified atmosphere packaging (M.A.P.). The main feature of this new range is the design that follows the Eco-Design logic, allowing to have the best performances with the minimum use of material and a view to Circular Economy, therefore thinking about the end of life, structured to ensure full recycling of the trays.
The materials we use are PET, with a minimum recycled content of 90%, from the SealMasterEvo line, or bioplastic such as Novamont's Mater-bi® from the SealMasterBio line.
In the first option, the trays can be recycled into the PET plastic stream; in the second option, composted in industrial composting plants. Ilip also integrates its offer with trays made with PET/ PE multilayer structure from the SealMasterDuo line.
The trays of the SealMaster range, therefore, have been designed to be used in heat-sealing molds already existing on the market and are an alternative to meat trays made with complex multilayer structures. These are features that ensure perfect processability on existing packaging lines and full recyclability, for a constant improvement of packaging sustainability.
Which are your expectations for the exhibition?
Our expectations are good: MEAT-TECH is the ideal event to enter the protein packaging market from the front door, bringing innovation and specialties, but above all packaging decidedly oriented towards environmental sustainability, thanks to our decades of experience in the production of food packaging and in the recycling of plastics.
What is your vision of the current market and the coming months?
We trust that the packaging sustainability and the transition to the circular economy will be the main drivers of packers and retailers choices. Ilip and the ILPA Group, protagonists of the circular packaging economy, are prepared for this transition, being among the few groups at European level to have vertically integrated the r-PET cycle, guaranteeing origin and traceability.
Today the Group recycles about 30,000 tons of post-consumer PET bottles per year in order to produce new food packaging. Sustainability for Ilip is understood in a broader sense and certainly concerns the logic of eco-design, the materials used to have an environmental impact as low as possible, but also the performance of the packaging that must be designed to minimize food waste. And the answer is “fit4purpose” packaging, like the trays in our SealMaster range.
